Mission Statement

who we are

The Commonwealth-in-England Barristers Association (CEBA) exists to promote the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary and the freedom of the legal professions in the Commonwealth. It seeks to promote cooperation between lawyers in the Commonwealth and through organising meetings, activities and functions.

In the 1970’s Great Britain was seen as an attractive destination for successive waves of migrants from the Commonwealth. Some of those were called to the Bar of England and Wales. They wanted to share their experiences and ideas with others from the Commonwealth and as such it was against this backdrop that the ‘Commonwealth in England Barristers’ Association’ (CEBA) was launched.

Meetings were held in Chambers and at High Commissions and attended by Barristers, Benchers, Judges as well as pupils and students studying for the Bar. Over the years CEBA has encouraged efforts to promote the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary and the freedom of the legal professions in Commonwealth countries. CEBA promotes co-operation between those engaged in the practice of law and it organises events and schemes in order to further these aims.
With this remit it is no wonder that CEBA continues to thrive and broaden its horizons today.

CEBA has benefited from the support and input from many influential people within the legal and political fields both far and wide. There is no doubt these relationships will continue to flourish.
